Gin is a type of clear spirit that is made by distilling grain or neutral spirit (rectified spirit) and infusing it with juniper berries and other botanicals. The most common base spirit used in gin production is barley, although corn, rye, and wheat can also be used. The juniper berry is the dominant flavor in gin, but other botanicals such as coriander, angelica root, orris root, and citrus peel are often used to add complexity and depth of flavor.

There are different styles of gin that vary in their production methods and botanical profiles, such as London Dry Gin, Old Tom Gin, Plymouth Gin, and Genever Gin. London Dry gin is the most common type and is known for its dry and juniper-forward flavor profile. Old Tom gin has a sweeter taste, Plymouth gin is unique to Plymouth, England and has a rich, smooth taste. Genever gin is the traditional style of Dutch gin, known for its malty, barley-forward flavor.

Gin can be enjoyed neat, on the rocks, or mixed into cocktails such as the Martini, Gin and Tonic, and the Negroni.
